DIY GoPro Tripod For Free In 5 steps And Under Ten Minutes

I was recently lucky enough to received a free GoPro Hero 3 in the mail from a social club online. I wanted a tripod for it but since it was free I wanted to see if I could make a free one for it. If you are like me and have some varied hobbies chances are you might play an instrument. I happen to play the guitar and had a spare music stand and thought that would make a great tripod. Some assembly will be required but it really is very simple and does not require any extra GoPro parts aside from what is given in the box. It will require a music stand for the base. These are the five easy steps that should take you under ten minutes to assemble:

1. Take your music stand, I used a On Stage Stand, and unscrew the top portion where the music is held. Remove the screw, washer, and knob. Set aside the top portion and the screw. You will want to keep these pieces as you will still be able to use it as a music stand later on.

2. Place your GoPro in its case and remove the thumb knob and any mounts that may be attached.

3.  Place your GoPro case over the top of the music stand and insert the washer in between the inside of one side of the case and the stand. This part is tricky because you have to hold the washer just right. You can use the washer on the outside but I found that this way makes it way more stable.

4. Insert the thumb knob through the stand, washer, and case. Make sure that the washer stays in place.
Place the music stand knob on the thumb knob and use the thumb knob to tighten it into place. The music stand knob is too big to manipulate under the GoPro so hold it tight and use the thumb knob.

5. Once tightened you will find that you can rotate the GoPro a full 360 degrees as well as tip it up and down. You will also be able to shorten or extend the music stand  based on preference or need. The shortest that I was able to lower it to was 23.5 inches and the tallest was 49.5 inches.
